HEAVEN’S BOOK

As we open up Your Word,
Send Your Spirit down, O Lord.
Grant a mind to know your will,
And a faithful heart instill.

Refrain

Nothing else we need beside:
With Your Word we will abide.
So, in faith, again we look
Deeply into Heaven’s Book.

Lord, we come to hear You now,
May we humbly kneel and bow.
We forsake our selfish way
And submit to what You say.

As we turn again to read,
Here is found all that we need
To inform the wand’ring soul
How to be made right and whole.

In Your Word You have made clear
What a sinner needs to hear:
“Come and welcome unto Christ
And receive eternal life!”

REFLECTION

In a discussion with this hymn’s composer, the point was raised that there are very few hymns about the Word of God. “Heaven’s Book” was written as a response to that shortage. It serves a twofold function. The first is to unpack the classic Reformed attributes of Scripture: it is authoritative (v. 2), necessary (v. 3), clear (v. 4), and sufficient (refrain). The second function of this hymn is as a prayer offered up to God as we approach His Word (v. 1): that He would grant us the Spirit insight that is crucial so as to read His Word and live.
